Shin

Reading about some Japanese names and got to Shin:

“Shin can be written using different kanji characters and can mean:

真, “true”
伸, “extend”
新, “new”
心, “heart”
信, “belief”
進, “progress”
慎, “humility”
晋, “advance”
紳, “gentleman””

That must get a hell of a lot more confusing than being called “John”.

Something that frustrates me slightly 

When you try to make food and all the recipes are in weird protoimperial measurements. I was having issues recently as I wanted to make a cake and was trying to determine how much of gelatin leaves I am supposed to put in. I live in the UK so this is the standard gelatin form that you find. 

The recipe I got from here and yes I do get that it’s Australian but still. It says 3 teaspoons gelatin. Gelatin what?

Now there are places where you can find the conversion but it just makes you go further down the rabbit hole. As in, it’s suggested you’re better off looking at the amount of water you add rather than the actual mass of gelatin. Unfortunately there’s no such data in my recipe other than “1/4 cup of boiling water” which tells me nothing because 1 (one) leaf is dissolved in 80 ml of water. Meanwhile 1/4 cup=59 ml. What.

Can we seriously not make an universal measurement of things. Don’t even get me started on thickened cream, heavy cream, double cream and so on.

Almost 6 months ago I decided to renew my camera (that is an understatement, all my cameras were either gone or too old to actually work). I decided to go with my old favourites and got a Nikon again. I decided on the Nikon D5500 and after I tested it a bit I concluded it was a great decision.

The camera comes with a 18-55 VRII Compact Lens which has proved quite useful, but as I wanted a bigger lens I also added a Tamron AF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 lens.
